### Summary
This position is located within the Anatomic Pathology area of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine Service at the VA Medical Center in Lebanon, Pennsylvania. The primary mission is to provide technical support services for the Pathologists making clinical diagnosis for human tissue specimens.
Work Schedule: Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

### Responsibilities
* Filing and retrieving laboratory test information
* Analyzing a problem, defining the issues, determining alternatives and developing corrective conclusions
* Cutting frozen sections and staining for intra-operative consultation and diagnosis
* Processing tissue and staining
* Performing gross examination and sectioning procedures
* Performing established quality control and quality assurance procedures
* Maintaining laboratory equipment and adequate stock of supplies and reagents
* Using a computer to record logs, print reports, and packages specimens and slides for mailing and transport
* Performing other related duties as assigned
**DESIGNATED DRUG-TESTING POSITION:**Applicants tentatively selected for VA employment in a testing designated position are subject to urinalysis to screen for illegal drug use prior to appointment. ### Qualifications
In accordance with 38 U.S.C. 7402(d), No person shall serve in direct patient care positions unless they are proficient in basic written and spoken English. You must be proficient in basic written and spoken English in order to meet the requirements of this position.
Basic Education Requirement: You must have successfully completed a Bachelor's or graduate/higher level degree that included a major field of study in an academic field related to the medical field, health sciences or allied sciences appropriate to the work of this position.
In addition to the Basic Education Requirement you must also meet one of the following:
SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: You must possess one year of specialized experience, equivalent to the next lower level (GS-7) in the Federal service, that equipped you with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities needed to successfully perform the duties of the position and that is typically in or related to a Histotechnologist position. Examples of specialized experience would typically include, but are not limited to: Experience for the performance of specialized work requiring experience in accessioning specimens, processing tissue specimens, embedding tissues, mounting tissues on slides, performing special staining procedures, documenting work, performs established quality assurance procedures and must have professional working knowledge of human anatomy, basic chemistry and histology.
SUBSTITUTION OF EDUCATION FOR EXPERIENCE: You must have successfully completed two years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a master's degree or a master's or equivalent graduate degree if it provided the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work.
COMBINATION OF EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION: Equivalent combinations of graduate education (above a Bachelor's degree) and specialized experience as described above, may also meet the total requirements for this position at this grade level. Note: only education in excess of one year of progressively higher graduate education or education beyond a bachelor's degree may be used to qualify.
Quality Ranking Factors* have been requested by the facility to help determine which of the basically qualified applicants are likely to be better qualified for a position. The quality ranking factor for this position is: "Are you certified as a Histotechnologist by The American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP)?" and "Do you have experience assisting with fine needle aspirations (FNA) or bone marrow biopsies?"
*Quality Ranking Factors are skills, knowledge, abilities, or other worker characteristics which could be expected to result in superior performance on the job. Quality ranking factors will not be used for screening, but may be used as ranking criteria. ### Additional information
**Physical Requirements:** Work requires regular and recurring physical exertion, such as the use of a microtome or cryostat and standing for long periods of time. Lifting of five gallon reagent containers as required. Occasionally it is required to work longer than eight hours per day. Manual dexterity is required. Visual acuity is necessary.
The work involves frequent and recurring exposure to blood, body fluids, as well as exposure to airborne pathogens, chemical hazards, and carcinogens. Normal safety procedures (use of safe work practices with equipment, avoidance of trips and falls, observance of fire regulations and safety procedures) are required. The work area is adequately lighted, heated, and ventilated.

**Receiving Service Credit for Earning Annual (Vacation) Leave:**Federal Employees earn annual leave at a rate (4, 6 or 8 hours per pay period) which is based on the number of years they have served as a Federal employee. VA may offer newly-appointed Federal employee's credit for their job-related non-federal experience or active duty uniformed military service. This credited service can be used in determining the rate at which they earn annual leave. Such credit must be requested and approved prior to the appointment date and is not guaranteed.
